Designing cabinets for your home

Knowing the kind of style you like, Crown Point can create a kitchen based on your desires. Furthermore, there can be variations within your particular choice of style--our designers work very hard achieving your design goal based on your "wishlist" and budget. So how do "style" and "variations" get communicated between ideas you have, and the creation we do?

Defining style choices

The style terms of "Arts and Crafts", "Shaker", "Early American", Victorian, etc., are descriptions--specific intent, but descriptions nonetheless. Immediately visions come to mind, such as the rugged handsomeness of Quarter-Sawn Oak frequently used in Arts & Crafts, or the simple, plain, and beautiful lines of a Shaker cherry kitchen. Perhaps a Victorian kitchen has been your dream, or an Early American design, complete with a Milk Paint finish.

Wonderful ideas and concepts. So far, so good. From here, we get a little more technical, but not to worry!

The design is in the details

We craft our cabinetry in four different face frame methods. By name, they are:

  • Square Inset
  • Beaded Inset
  • New England
  • Full Overlay

Though you are certainly free to choose your favorite face frame treatment, it may help to consider, style-wise, where the most common applications of each apply.

Below are "edge-view" illustrations with descriptions (Note: Hinges are not shown!):

Cabinets

Square Inset
Here is what's referred to as "flush-fitting" doors (and drawers). The door (and drawer) is entirely contained within the opening of the face frame. This is the most common type of construction used in crafting Shaker period styling or Early American. Click for photo example.

Beaded Inset
This is also a flush-fit method, but as you can see, a decorative bead attached to the face frame surrounds the door opening. An elegant touch that works well with, but not limited to, Victorian styling. Click for photo example.

New England
Commonly found in traditionally styled kitchens, this is a 3/8" overlay. The rabbeted edge allows the door to partially overlay the face frame. Click for photo example.

Full Overlay
Used extensively in our Limited Line and Transitional Series, this is a frameless full overlay design. The construction method involves a door almost completely covering the opening of the cabinet. Using a hidden hinge allows for a very clean, linear design result. Click for photo example.
